Girls on the Run is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to creating a world where every girl knows and activates her limitless potential and is free to boldly pursue her dreams.

OUR PROGRAMS

Girls on the Run of Central Virginia is an independent Council of Girls on the Run International, which has a network of over 200 Councils across 50 states and the District of Columbia. Girls on the Run of Central Virginia was established in 2006 to serve the Greater Lynchburg area. Since that time we have expanded to cover the Greater Charlottesville area as well, serving over 1000 participants annually.

Girls on the Run International was established in 1996 in Charlotte, North Carolina by Molly Barker. What started with thirteen girls in one school has grown to over 200 councils in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. With the help of almost 100,000 volunteers, Girls on the Run served nearly 180,000 girls in 2015, including our millionth girl! Girls on the Run continues to grow and currently hosts more than 350 end-of-season 5K events across the United States, making the Girls on the Run 5K series the largest in the country. Girls on the Run has also expanded to include middle school girls through Heart & Sole, a program dedicated to the unique needs of adolescent girls.

“There are few programs that have the life changing power of Girls on the Run...not only for the girls, but for the families, volunteers and staff as well. Girls on the Run provides a true "feel good" opportunity to build stronger, more empowered girls and women.”

Cindy McGinnis

5K Coordinator, South Region

“Girls on the Run can change your world in so many ways. It can make your daughter physically and emotionally stronger, and more ready to wade through the mud that can be middle school and beyond. It can open and start conversations about a variety of issues and thoughts and dreams. As a parent, it will allow you to see your child blossom and feel ready to take on the world.”

Hayley Miller

Charlottesville Program Director

“I love how Girls on the Run empowers girls to find their voice and feel confident in themselves. It is so rewarding to see the smiles at our celebration 5k as the girls see their hard work in action and feel empowered, supported and successful. As a head coach I learn just as much from my girls as they do, they amaze me with their kindness, strength and courage everyday. Girls on the Run has changed my life and it is sure to change the life of the girls, coaches and families!”

Megan Grant

5K Coordinator, North Region

“I love how my whole family is able to be involved in empowering girls everywhere!”

We're always considering passionate individuals to join our team and help us inspire more girls in the Central Virginia area.
